PUTTING A STOP TO NOISE NUISANCE IN ST ALBANS

ENVIRONMENTAL health officers have been working with Special Constables in the Central Area (St Albans, Welwyn/Hatfield and Hertsmere) to help put a stop to noise nuisance and the Constabulary is keen to extend the successful scheme across the county.

Operation Reprise has been running since May and is being run on a pilot six-month basis to tackle the quality of life issues with teams being deployed across the Area from 10pm to 3am on Friday and Saturday nights to deal with incidents in an effective and timely manner.

Chief Superintendent Dave Wharton said: “Noise nuisance is very high on the list of complaints from members of the public and although it is not solely the police’s responsibility, we have adopted a partnership approach to deal robustly with it.”

Cllr Anthony Rowlands said: “Noise nuisance can be a real blight on peoples’ lives. I am pleased that the police are working with the district council to take prompt and effective action against those responsible for causing this type of misery.”

Dave continued: “Feedback from members of the public has been very positive so far and environmental health officers are pleased that through this initiative, they are able to offer an enhanced service with support of our special constables, who are always willing to help and have embraced the initiative with real enthusiasm. Our local authority colleagues have been flexible and innovative in their readiness to use staff across normal boundaries.”

He added: “It has become clear that this service fills an obvious gap in trying to improve life for our residents and so we are hoping to make it permanent.

He said: “A similar scheme has been running in Stevenage over the summer and we are very keen to involve the other local authorities and extend it across the county over the next few months.

"Chief executives are encouraged to discuss this with their senior police colleagues locally. This is a great example of how partnership working can really help our communities be – and feel – safer.”
