TEXT MESSAGE SUCCESS FOLLOWING DRUGS RAID IN ST ALBANS

SIX hundred and fifty four text message recipients logged on to a special police website during an operation to crack down on recreational cocaine users in St Albans last week.

Six hundred and 68 text messages were sent to people who had called the three main ‘drug hotline’ numbers belonging to 18 people arrested last week as part of Operation Resold – with 654 different computers logging on to the website.

“This is an amazing 98 per cent success rate!” said Inspector Neil Morehen. “We know that we had 654 visits to the website but cannot say that 654 people visited the site as it measures different computers, not individuals, as ‘hits.’

"It may be for example that people receiving the text message sent it on to their friends who logged on or it could be that the same person logged on at work and at home, which would count as two ‘hits’.

“In any case, these are very encouraging results and although are not 100 per cent accurate in terms of the number of people who logged from the original 668 list, I’m confident that the innovative initiative which PC Ben Freeney came up with has been a huge success.

"It may be that just receiving the text from us is enough to make these people think again about their future.”

654 different computers logged on to the front page which included a message from Chief Superintendent Alison Roome-Gifford about why they had received the text and assuring them that no action would be taken against them in relation to last week’s arrests.

About a third, 230 computer ‘hits’ were counted for the press release that was put on the website. And interestingly, 129 ‘hits’ were received in November to the Constabulary’s main ‘Talk to Frank’ website page.

Neil said: “This is very interesting and encouraging as it implies that these people looked for the information about Talk to Frank after visiting the special Resold website.”

Nineteen men between the ages of 17 and 29 from the St Albans area were charged or bailed for supplying cocaine and converting criminal property (money laundering) under the Proceeds of Crime Act (POCA) following dawn arrests last Wednesday (November 12).

Of these, 14 have been remanded in custody.
